4 Best Hotels for US Open

Hotels near the US Open in Flushing Meadows

By , About.com Guide

Hotels near the US Open book up fast and early. If you are a serious tennis fan, or just want to save a few bucks, the best borough to stay for the US Open is Queens. Here are my top 4 picks for US Open hotels.

1. Best All-Around US Open Hotel - New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott

The New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott has been a top choice for tennis players and TV crews covering the US Open for years. The hotel is across the street from LaGuardia Airport, and offers a quick shuttle to the US Open and Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Expect quality rooms -- maybe not as large as you would hope -- but the service is superior and prices are cheaper than Manhattan. The Marriott was renovated in 2007.

2. Closest Hotel to the US Open - Holiday Inn LaGuardia Airport

Note: Formerly the Ramada Plaza Hotel - LaGuardia Airport

The Holiday Inn is the only hotel that can actually bill itself as within walking distance from the US Open (and Citi Field, the new Shea Stadium). But walking there is overrated when you have to cross a major, urban thoroughfare and watch out for traffic exiting a couple highways. It's better to take a shuttle.

This hotel has been affiliated with the Mets for years. It's the closest that you can sleep to the tennis.

Holiday Inn LaGuardia Airport, 37-10 114th St, Corona, NY 11368, 718-651-2100 and 800-272-6232

3. Best Flushing Hotel for Flushing Meadows - Sheraton LaGuardia East

Located in downtown Flushing, it's the best hotel in what's a fairly middle-class Chinatown neighborhood and a quick one stop on the 7 subway or Long Island Railroad (LIRR) to Flushing Meadows. This is the best nearby hotel if you want to experience a real Queens neighborhood, eat dim sum before a day of tennis, and get your comfy feathers. The hotel caters to the Chinese and Korean business community.

There's excellent food -- modern takes on Western and Eastern culinary classics -- at Deluge Restaurant in the hotel, but its basement location is the pits.

4. Best Budget Hotel for US Open - La Quinta Inn Queens

You would be pound-wise to consider this motel, the least expensive on our list. It's in Sunnyside, part of larger Long Island City, Queens.

It's not as posh as the others, but it's a convenient and clean choice, in a safe neighborhood, midway between the US Open and Manhattan. It's even a quick 5-minute walk to the 7 subway.

Try the local Sunnyside restaurants for some of the best ethnic eats in Queens. Coffee can't get any fresher at Baruir where it's roasted inside the small shop.

The motel is nothing special, but your time at the US Open will be even more special for the money you save and the neighborhood you experience.

5. More Hotel Ideas for US Open and Flushing Meadows

Need more options? Run a search on Kayak for LaGuardia Airport hotels to see more options convenient to the courts. Most hotels near the airport can help with a shuttle to the Open or arrange a taxi ride.

Farther by car and less convenient to Flushing Meadows are the JFK hotels. Public transportation from the JFK hotels to Flushing Meadows is not easy, but it's definitely cheaper than staying in Manhattan.

If you do want to say in Manhattan and got the money for it, then start with the list of cheap, recommended NYC hotels.
