History of the Queens County Farm Museum
The farm dates to the 1690s, and the farmhouse to the 1770s. It was a family farm until 1926 when it was sold to New York State for use by nearby Creedmoor State Hospital. In 1975 the non-profit group the Colonial Farmhouse Restoration Society of Bellerose, Inc. took over management of the property (then abandoned by Creedmoor) with the mission of restoring the original farm and making it a public educational resource.
Its now one of the most popular farm museums in the United States, with about 500,000 visitors per year.
The farm is owned by the New York City Department of Parks, operated by the Colonial Farmhouse Restoration Society of Bellerose, Inc. and is a member of the Historic House Trust of New York City.
