Every summer Socrates Sculpture Park with the Museum of the Moving Image hosts an outdoor film series, showing movies from around the world on the banks of the East River in Long Island City, Queens. (The park is very close to Astoria.)

The ninth annual film festival is simply named - Outdoor Cinema 2007: An Annual Festival of International Film, Music, Dance, and Food. The movie emphasis this year is on music, so you can dance along under the stars.

Schedule - Socrates Outdoor Cinema 2007

  • All screenings start at sunset on Wednesday evenings, roughly 8:30 p.m. in July and 8 p.m. in August.
  • Pre-screening entertainment starts at 7 p.m.
  • Food for sale on-site, from local restaurants, usually the cuisine of the movie's homeland
  • Live entertainment before the movie starts
  • Bring your own blanket or chair
  • Free parking in next-door lot at Costco
  • Free!

  • A girl band rehearses for a rock festival in this dryly-funny charming film that is named for its irresistible theme song..

August 1, 2007 - USA
THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T {USA, 1953, 88 mins.) Directed by Roy Rowland.

  • Dr. Seuss (Theodore Geisel) wrote the screenplay and lyrics for this musical fantasy about a young boy whose nightmares are sparked by the fear of his overbearing piano teacher.

August 8, 2007 - India

August 22, 2007 - South Africa
U-CARMEN E-KHYELISTSHA {South Africa, 2005, 120 mins.) Directed by Mark Dornford-May

  • Georges Bizet's Carmen is magically transported to modern-day South Africa.
