4 Hotels in Long Island City, New York

By , About.com Guide

A hotel in Long Island City? No, you say, I want to stay in New York City, not Long Island City. But you're wrong. Long Island City is part of New York City, just across the Easr River from Manhattan. (Manhattan is the island full of skyscrapers that dominates the city.)

Long Island City as a neighborhood has emereged since the early 2000s as a residential desitination for city-swellers escapting the high proces and claustrophobia of Manahttan. You can find a similar escape at a hotel. Cost is the biggest reason to stay. You're further away from the heatt of the city, but still close enough.

The most important consideration when staying in Long Island city is access to the subways. Most of these hotels are similar in amenities and even price. Most were built in the last 10 years. What will matter to you and your feet most is the walking distance to the local subway. Here are four hotels in Long Island City to consider.

1. Z New York Hotel

A contemporary, boutique hotel in Long Island City, Z Hotel has style. It's got great views of Manhattan's skyline, but its location is also a drawback. It's hard on Queens Plaza, which is still in transition with new condos and dodgy "gentlemen's clubs." Take a taxi and you'll be happier at night. During the daytime, the subways at Queens Plaza are very convenient.

2. Ravel Hotel

Ravel Hotel is another boutique hotel near Queens Plaza. It shares many of the same qualities as Z Hotel -- style and pizzazz at less cost, but in a transitional neighborhood.

    8-08 Queens Plaza South
    Long Island City, NY 11101

3. La Quinta Inn Queens

You would be pound-wise to consider this motel, the least expensive on our list. It's in Sunnyside, part of larger Long Island City, Queens.

It's not as posh as the others, but it's a convenient and clean choice, in a safe neighborhood. It's a quick 5-minute walk to the 7 subway.

Try the local Sunnyside restaurants for some of the best ethnic eats in Queens. Coffee can't get any fresher at Baruir where it's roasted inside the small shop.

The motel is nothing special, but your time in NYC will be even more special for the money you save and the neighborhood you experience.

La Quinta Inn Queens, 37-18 Queens Blvd, Sunnyside, NY 11101, 718-729-8775

4. Holiday Inn - Long Island City - Manhattan View

This hotel is further away in the Blissville neighborhood of Long Island City. It's a great name, but is Blissville all about bliss? It's cheap for sure, but there's no subway. Blissville is cut-off from the hip part of Long Island City by a highway. If you stay here, you'll need a taxi or your own car.
