Great espresso can be found in Astoria these days, joining the familiar world of frappes and Greek coffee that are a regular taste in neighborhood. With that in mind, here are five places to find amazing coffee in Astoria.
Established in March 2011, Queens Kickshaw deftly brings high quality coffee to Astoria. Their coffee beans (including single origin beans) are sourced and roasted by Coffee Labs in Tarrytown NY, and their milk comes from Hudson Valley Fresh, which they use for cappucinos, lattes, and cortados. The baristas are dedicated to making well-crafted drinks and their equipment helps them succeed. A beautiful La Marzocco Strada espresso machine makes amazing espresso drinks and they use beautiful Hario v60 ceramic drip cones for their pour overs. Thoughtful details like liquid sugar syrup help you incorporate sweetener into your coffee with minimal fuss.

Sweetleaf Cafe in Long Island City offers some of the best coffee in Queens. They brew Stumptown coffee, the much heralded coffee roaster from Portland, OR, as well as coffee from Verve, based in Santa Cruz, CA. As of this writing, Sweetleaf is the only espresso bar in NYC to serve Verve coffee. They make espresso drinks with their La Marzocco Linea espresso machine and pour overs with the Hario v60 ceramic drip cone. They also give classes on brewing and tasting coffee. They've become so successful that in the last year they moved to a much larger and lovely space.

3. M. Wells
If you're looking for solid, strong diner coffee, this is the place for you. It's rich and delicious, and for $1.50 a pop, it's quite a deal. They'll even give you real, honest-to-goodness cream for your coffee, which is really saying something these days. Pair it with a serving of pudding chomeur, and you'll be set for a real taste treat that can't be beat.

4. Astoria's Greek Cafes
A roundup of coffee in Astoria wouldn't be complete without mentioning the ubiquitous frappes available at the Greek cafes that populate 30th Avenue. They are strong yet ridiculously tasty, rich, and sweet (if you like). Whether you choose Athens Cafe, Grand Cafe, or Avenue Cafe, a tall, icy frappe is waiting for you there.
Athens Cafe, 32-07 30th Ave, Astoria NY, 718-626-2164
Avenue Cafe, 35-27 30th Ave, Astoria, NY, 718-278-6967
Grand Cafe, 37-01 30th Ave, Astoria, NY, 718-777-7321
This charming Greek restaurant in the heart of 31st Avenue's food scene offers Greek coffee on their menu for $3.50. This is no frothy frappe, but something more akin to Turkish coffee. It's very finely ground, steeped in water, and sweetened with sugar. When you're done, perhaps overturn your cup and engage in kafemandeia - reading your fortune in the coffee grounds.
