Dear Queens.About.com,
I read your appraisal of pizzerias in Middle Village. In my view, your comparison between Carlo's and Rosa's left out a few important facts: the human touch and the marinara sauce.
I have been a resident of Middle Village for 19 years and prior to that I visited the neighborhood because of the now defunct Arion Theater. I have been eating at Carlo's for over twenty years and Rosa's for approximately 18 years.
In my view, Carlo's is the better pizzeria. Carlo's has a palpable neighborhood atmosphere created by friendly staff that offer a friendly greeting. This is not the case in Rosa's, which, at times, has an assembly line atmosphere and whose staff don't even take the time to look at you when you order.
One more glaring difference is the taste of the marinara sauce. By far, Carlo's makes a better quality sauce. The texture and flavorful taste cannot be compared to Rosa's raw and canned taste. Carlos' baked ziti and parmigiana hero sandwiches (try the shrimp) easily surpass Rosa's fare.
Your assessment of Rosa's Grandma slice is accurate, but Carlo's eating experience, endless soda fountain, prompt table service, quality marinara sauce, and friendly atmosphere earn my vote of confidence and endorsement as Middle Village's best pizzeria.
Thanks,
Gary Maio
