Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., landscape architect, and Grosvenor Atterbury, supervising architect, are responsible for much of the look and layout of Forest Hills Gardens. They designed the area, beginning in 1910, at the request of Olivia Slocum Sage (and her Russell Sage Foundation), with the intent of creating a carefully controlled, "garden city" for those of modest means. They succeeded.
