The Bottom Line

Micky's Place has closed its Forest Hills location and is moving to Bayside - Fall 2007. Mickey's Place in Forest Hills serves excellent sushi for a neighborhood restaurant. The raw fish outshines everything else on the Japanese menu. Make sure to ask about the specials and enjoy.

Pros

  • Great sushi
  • Good value

Cons

  • Service is slow when crowded
  • Closed - Moving to Bayside

Description

  • Address: 101-16 Queens Blvd (between 67th Drive & 67th Road), Forest Hills (close to Rego Park)
  • Phone: (718) 897-9898
  • Parking usually available along Queens Boulevard east toward 71st Avenue.
  • Mickey's is just outside the 67th Avenue subway station (R, G, V lines).
  • The exterior of the restaurant is not brightly lit, and it may be difficult to spot it when driving.
  • Accepts take-out orders.
  • "Mickey" refers to the chef and owner, not an odd Japanese-Irish crooner or even Mickey Mouse.
  • Excellent, authentic Tokyo decorations like beautiful Sapporo beer ads and odd tapestries.

Guide Review - Mickey's Place Japanese Restaurant (Closed)

Micky's Place has closed its Forest Hills location and is moving to Bayside - Fall 2007. Mickey's Place serves up exceptional sushi for the price ($1.50-4 per piece and $4+ for rolls). Its fish is almost always fresh and presented well, not too fancy, not too plain, just right. The ginger served with sushi isn't dyed pink but is its natural color. Mickey's has a comfortable, neighborhood feel. But when the neighborhood shows up to eat, you will have to wait for your fish. Make sure to ask for "toro" (tuna belly). That's the belly that makes my belly happy. I'm not a fan of Mickey's non-sushi foods, except for the tasty vegetable and shrimp tempura. Though I appreciate that the staff always offers a free tidbit to start the meal, the chicken wings and seaweed bits they've given me weren't worth the price of admission.
