P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in Queens, New York

P.S. 1

P.S. 1 in Long Island City

John Roleke
P.S. 1 is an internationally renowned museum devoted to contemporary art. It is known for its avant-garde exhibits and for leading the alternative space movement. Artists collaborate with the administrators, and some have studio space on site. P.S. 1 is affiliated with MoMA, but has a much looser, crazier feel. Somehow P.S. 1 has managed to stay creative even as it has gained fame and become part of the established art world.

P.S. 1's website has current exhibit information.

School's Out:

The museum is in a former public school, and there's a real edge and energy created by the juxtaposition of an old school and new art. Walk toward class as the sounds of experimental video art bounce down the stone and metal corridors. Take the stairs up to the roof for a smoke and an unadvertised sculpture. Peer into the boiler room downstairs (or is it off limits?) and find the art tucked into the corners. Add to the dissonce the attendants, many of whom are students in local high schools.

Coffee and Cafe: Communitea (47-02 Vernon Blvd) has a San Francisco neighborhood vibe with a chalk board full of teas and coffee drinks. Good pressed sammies too. Drinks and Burgers: Lounge 47 (47-10 Vernon Blvd) is the coolest bar in Queens and serves a great menu. McReilly's Pub (4642 Vernon Blvd), though, just can't be beat for the burgers.
