LIRR and the Transit Strike

Wednesday December 21, 2005
  • Update: LIRR running shuttles to Manhattan from Shea Stadium (Flushing), Bayside, Jamaica, Queens Village, and Larurelton
Tuesday evening Penn Station was a scene of mass confusion. The people who got home early were the ones who ignored directions by Long Island Railroad (LIRR) employees and walked that extra step to see if they could get on the platform.

Though the LIRR says it will charge more for tickets bought on the train ($4 in city zone), that was not the case today. Most riders didn't even have their tickets checked. Ticket lines, however, caused massive delays, which sometimes resulted in trains leaving Woodside only half full. Woodside! That's ridiculous.

The LIRR has begun running shuttle trains back and forth between Penn Station and Jamaica. Service on Wednesday should be every 15 minutes or so during rush hour. Other trains will be rerouted and schedules changed. See the LIRR Service Chart.

When going home via Penn, the LIRR asks that you use an entrance specific for your destination. See the Penn Station entrance map.

The LIRR Service Chart seems to exclude stations from Flushing-Main Street to Auburndale plus Little Neck and Douglaston on the morning rush hour. Could this be possible? Could Flushing be excluded from the rush hour commute? It has been impossible to reach LIRR customer service -- 718-217-5477 -- and confirm the Flushing trains.

  • Update - There are no LIRR trains stopping at Flushing's Main Street, but there is a LIRR shuttle from nearby Shea Stadium.

Without a doubt, there will be LIRR service from Bayside. If you know more about the LIRR trains out of Flushing, please post a note or email queens@about.com.
