The Zoo in the Park
Sunday June 14, 2009
Have you ever been to the Queens Zoo in Flushing Meadows Park? It's small and pretty nicely done. I would definitely recommend it for families with small kids in tow. It lacks the wow power of the giraffes or elephants you might see at the Bronx Zoo, but it's a fine place for a stroll and to see some animal native to North and South America in what are suppose to be natural habitats. Here's my full review and a few notes on getting there and eating nearby.
What's been your experience with the Queens Zoo? Would you recommend it to your out-of-town guests? Please share in the comments.

I go to the Queens Zoo at least once a year, and always have a great time. It’s uncrowded, and makes a great afternoon filler. You can breeze through the entire place (including the petting zoo) in an hour if you want … or take your time watching various feedings (sea lions, coyotes, mountain lions), enjoying the ducks & waterfowl, or walking through my favorite: the aviary.
Inside the old Buckminster geodome, there’s a cleverly winding path which takes you up and around various levels of flora inhabited by all kinds of birds. Not the humid & loud birdhouses up in the Bronx …. this is a big open area where you have a 360-degree view up, down, and around. The porcupine guy in there is frikkin’ cute, too.
I’ve brought handfuls of guests there, and all were happily surprised by the experience.
Oh, there are no street vendors nearby, nor grill/restaurants inside … but there’s a vending machine area (near the sea lions) with a decent selection of candy, pastries, ice-cream, & microwaveable noshes.
Haven’t been there? Go!
