The Bohemian Beer Garden - Season Opener Memorial Day Weekend
Bohemian Hall in Astoria, Queens, has a wonderful beer garden. Turn off a crazy urban street -- the elevated subway overhead -- and escape into this huge beer garden with its shady trees, picnic tables, pitchers of icy beer, and platters of hearty Czech food and barbecue. This place is a must on summer weekends, a true urban oasis.
The only problem these days is the crowds. You have to get there early for an easy entrance. Arrive after dinner on a weekend and the line takes 15-20 minutes to enter.
The outdoor garden opened as soon as the weather warmed up, but on Memorial Day Weekend it kicks off the summer season with the Annual Czech & Slovak Festival. There will be folk dancing, a brass band, other entertainment, and lots of beer and food (complete event schedule). Again, get there early, but especially to catch Queens own Pilsner Brass Band, pumping out the oom-pah.

I’m writing just to say that I loved the photo and write up editor John Roleke did of the Pilsner Brass Band at Bohemian Hall and the Bohemian Hall’s Memorial Day Czech & Slovak Festival coming up. Keep up the great work, Mr. Roleke!
