This one I’m positive of – that’s the old RKO Keith in Flushing. It was part of a battle between the building owner, who wanted to rip the place down, and those who wanted to landmark it. The owner ripped down the marquis, but the lobby was landmarked and is, supposedly, still in there. Probably moldering away. Such a shame. That’s the theater that I saw Star Wars in and I remember the clouds on the ceiling.
Wow! This is on Northern & Main Streets in Flushing. I have passed by this building on the bus for years — years!! — and always wondered what it was, and why it hadn’t been turned into a bank yet like everything else in that area. I have imagined countless stories in my head about its history. I daydreamed that one day it would become a really cool music venue or something for our part of the city. Thanks to about.com and to Debbie for the rundown on this place! I wish I had been around to see Star Wars there back in the day.
I now this one, the old RKO Keith’s theatre in Flushing ..
That is definitely the old RKO Keith movie theater at the intersection of Northern Blvd and Main Street in Flushing!!! I pass it every day on the Q65 bus on my way from the subway terminus in Flushing to the Poppenhusen Institute in College Point!! It has long been dark and have been awaiting its reincarnation for years! I wouldn’t mind seeing the building used as a theater once again – my preference would be live theatrical performances! It would be a grand venue to add to the jewels Queens already has!
Yes, the RKO on Northern. I don’t think anything was done with the property. I do remember the ceiling was so beautiful. It was looking up to the stars
Definitely Northern @ Main. Why does it still look that way? Someone should turn it into a grand dim sum palace.
Myrtle and 64th place…I haven’t been home in 30 yrs so this is a wild guess
Yes, it’s the former RKO on Northern Blvd at Main St in Flushing. It’s been bordered up for years. The site has been mired in controversy for decades. Here’s the latest from May 2008:
