Follow me on:

  • Valentine's Day in Queens [About.com]
Our top picks for romantic dinners and fun things to do with your sweetie (top 7). Plus, the Daily News recommends wine bar Domaine Bar a Vins (50-04 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City, 718-784-2350).
  • A Family Bakery, Still Going Strong [NY Times]
Sugar Bun Bake Shop (156-22 Cross Bay Blvd, Howard Beach, 718-843-9233) "caters to traditional New York tastes with rugelach, cheesecakes, black-and-white cookies and coffeecakes" and now with website for overnight delivery for your crumb cake-loving uncle who moved to Tucson back in the 80s. I'd say the black-and-white's alone are worth the trip.
  • Breaking News - Wine Gallery to Become "Bonfire Grill" [Forest Hills 72]
The weary Wine Gallery has closed, and will be replaced The Bonfire Gril (72-27 Austin, Forest Hills), by the owners of Manhattan's The Uptown Lounge and Choice Kitchen NYC. Quote from an owner: "you're really going to be impressed by the food."
  • Upi Jaya "It's a colorful way to spice up your day" [Eating in Translation]
I second Dave the translator's thumbs-up for Indonesian Upi Jaya (76-04 Woodside Ave, Elmhurst, 718-458-1807). It's good, tasty food with some spice, but not the drama of Thai. Beyond Indonesian, Woodside Avenue as you go from Broadway east to Woodside is a great street in Elmhurst for exploring new tastes.
