Results - Best and Worst of Queens 2007

Thursday January 3, 2008
Results are in. Your votes made the Jamaica Flux public art exhibition in downtown Jamaica the Best of Queens 2007 by a comfortable margin, besting Jackson Heights by 9% (see Best of Queens 2007 voting). The 350th anniversary of the Flushing Remonstrance placed third and elicited the best comment: "I can’t believe that Jackson Heights getting a Starbucks is beating out the Flushing Remonstrance. What does that say about us?"

And you also voted the demolition of the parsonage at St. Saviour's in Maspeth the Worst of Queens 2007 (see Worst of Queens 2007 voting). We'll call that vote a proxy for the whole sad story of St. Saviour's in 2007, as community activist struggle against losing a piece of history and a needed green space.

The second worst was Barbara Corcoran's obnoxious advice to pave over your front lawn. Concern for quality of life in our neighborhoods trumps even the collapse of the Mets (third worst, but we'll say the team's pathetic last month was the worst on a national scale).

There you have it. Best of health to all in Queens this 2008! Let's pray for more of the best and less of the worst this year.
