Queens Eats, Restaurant Roundup - Sabay Thai, Just Like Mother's, Soups, Knish Nosh
Wednesday December 12, 2007
- One Borough, Many Flags [NY Times]
It's Queens as a tourist destination for foodies. Sabay Thai (75-19 Broadway, Elmhurst, 718-424-9054) in the video looks so very, very delicious.
- Sharing the Dough: Inside a Secret Queens Dumpling Factory [Village Voice]
A visit to a dumpling chef's basement operation in Queens. Sure, it sounds delicious, and so hipster cool because it's on the down-low and run by a Chinese chef wearing a funny bunny-face apron. But it's illegal! Basement kitchens in residential areas turning out 4,000 dumplings a day mean no health inspections, no taxes, loitering cars and food smells, and annoyed neighbors. Get a restaurant if you're so good.
- The Best Latkes in New York [Ed Levine's New York Eats]
Ed Levine loves Just Like Mother's (110-60 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, 718-544-3294) almost as much as I do (see best breakfasts in Queens), and he writes their latkes "even put my late grandmother's to shame." Heaven forbid!
- Cure That Cold Queens Style [Gothamist]
Ack! Save your eyes! Gothamist sports possibly the worst food photography on the Internet, but it's worth the eye burn to read of Korean, Jewish, and Mexican soup cures. (Book Chang Dong Restaurant, 40-06 Queens Blvd, Sunnyside, 718-706-0899; Ben's Best Kosher Deli, 96- 40 Queens Blvd, Rego Park, 718- 897-1700; Taqueria Coatzingo, 76-05 Roosevelt Ave, Jackson Heights, 718-424-1977)
- Lifetime Achievement Award (Business Category) [Forest Hills 72]
Vote for Forest Hills landmarks Knish Nosh (10030 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, 718-897-5554), Krause's Candy Kitchen: (10302 Metropolitan Ave, Forest Hills) or Eddie's Sweet Shop (105-29 Metropolitan Ave, Forest Hills). Yeah, there's another choice in the poll, but I wouldn't eat anything they sell.
- Ozone Park butcher helps provide Muslims with their holiday feasts [Daily News] via Lost in the Ozone
Halal slaughterhouse Madani Halal Lamb, Goat & Poultry (100-15 94th Ave, Ozone Park) prepares your fresh goat, lamb, geese, and turkey.
- Closing - Burmese Cafe has shut its doors. Oh, the sadness.
