- Reader Tips - Chicken Pot Pie and Don't Believe the Hype
Astoria resident Matt writes:- To commend Thai Elephant (2109 31st St, Astoria, 718-204-8827), "a little cheaper than the other one two doors down and just as good if not better. Also, less crowded. "
- And that McReilly's Pub's (4642 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City, 718-786-7727) "Chicken Pot Pie cannot be beat."
- While the 718 Restaurant (35-01 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria) is "Not worth the Hype." Mind that's hype with a capital H.
- market watch: Jackson Heights [Chowhound]
Terrific long thread about supermarkets, butchers, fishmongers, coffee, cheese, and more foodstuffs to be found in Jackson Heights. Excellent recommendations for anyone new to the neighborhood. One butcher close by in Woodside got a few mentions for American-style cuts of meat, plus game and exotic meats and prepared Italian dishes: Ottomanelli & Sons Prime Meat Shop (61-05 Woodside Ave, Woodside) - More - Latino Eats and Markets in Jackson Heights
- Eat in Queens: Indo-Chinese food [Grocery Guy]
Love of Indian-style Chinese food: "On menus you'll recognize the basic structure of Chinese food - deep fried or stir-fried meat and/or vegetables and tofu in sauce over rice - but augmented with Indian flavors like curry, ginger, garlic and a ton of hot peppers." Grocery guy rates Tangra Masala (87-09 Grand Ave, Elmhurst) as new York City's gold-standard for Indo-Chinese cuisine. (More restaurants listed on Grocery Guy's wiki.)
