Garbage Pickup in NYC After Christmas

Tuesday December 26, 2006
It's the day after Christmas in NYC and you're overflowing not just with holiday cheer and new socks, but discarded wrapping paper and packaging. But when to put the holiday garbage out for pickup?

NYC Sanitation crews had off on Christmas Day, but they're back in action this morning, hauling away trash and recycling as fast as possible.

  • If you had trash or recycling scheduled for Monday, then put it today (or you could have after 5 p.m. on Christmas Day).
  • If you have trash or recycling scheduled for Tuesday or any other day this holiday week, then put it out as normal (after 5 p.m. the previous night).
But the truck didn't make it as scheduled? It's unfortunate, but sometimes on Christmas week New York's Strongest fall a bit behind. Hey, it's a big city that's got a lot to unwrap. But the garbage trucks should get to your block within the following day. Simply keep your trash out on the curb one more night.

If it's real problem and it's a health hazard or blocking the sidewalks or street, call New York City to log a complaint at 311. At the very least you're documenting the problem.
