Recycle Old Computers in Queens
The only bad thing about getting a new computer or cell phone is getting rid of the old one. Dumping electronics (aka e-waste) in the regular trash is a poor use of our city resources (and for the environment) since they contain so much metal that can be recycled. But regular recycling can't deal with the toxic bits inside them. It's illegal to put them in your weekly curbside recycling.
So this October take your junky old laptop, clunky monitor, and dead cellphone to one of the NYC Sanitation Department's electronics recycling events. The Queens one is on October 7 at Queens College. At the same event you can donate clean linens and clothing for which you can receive a tax-deduction receipt. There aren't any receipts, however, for the junk electronics. But if you're one of the first 100 people to recycle, you will receive a $5 Best Buy gift card.
