Summer Solstice Party at Socrates Sculpture Park

Monday June 19, 2006
Celebrate the longest day of the year this Wednesday on the East River waterfront. Watch the sun take its time disappearing into the canyons of Manhattan, while munching on dinner and checking out the Interstate art at the Socrates Sculpture Park.

There'll be free art-making workshops where you can make your own butterfly wings, wishing sticks, and hippie-hippie cycle spoke flowers. And music by Malian band Baye Kouyate Et Les Tourgarake and by DJ Jonny Fego, while BMX stunt rider Jeff McIntyre leaps over our heads.

What else? Well, the Girl Scouts will be selling samoas and thin mints in the midst of this organized chaos, and there'll be all sorts of face-painting and crazy-like-a-fox alternative fuel talk and the Film Chefs Restaurant serving dinner. Hey, the solstice only happens once a year. They might as well pull out all the stops.
