Soap Box Derby Racers in Queens

Tuesday June 6, 2006
soap box derby Soap box derby racers, NASCAR for the precar tweens and teens -- literally, the "All-American Soap Box Derby" is a "youth initiative of NASCAR" - come to East Elmhurst, Queens, this weekend.

Called the Flushing Meadows Sox Box Derby, the race is not in the flat-flat-flat Flushing Meadows Park, but zooms down a hilly stretch of East Elmhurst, just shy of LaGuardia. Racers, ages 8-17, compete in three categories for prizes. They've either built their own racers (we hope -- and festooned them with skulls and Valvoline patches), or used a kit. Good luck to all racers.
