Long Island City Tours in March

Wednesday February 22, 2006
Move your legs this March and explore changing Long Island City. Urban geographer Jack Eichenbaum leads three touro of the neighborhood in the coming month. There's one for train buffs, another that compares Greenpoint to LIC, and, my pick, the third explores "daylight" factory buildings and their new uses. Details after the jump.
  • Makeover and Consolidation of Rail Transit in LIC, 1860-1920
  • March 11 , 2006, 1-4 p.m., cost TBD, reservations 718-694-1867
  • With The Art of Laura Cantor exhibit at the NY Transit Museum, the tour explores transportation key role in Long Island City, from the railroads on the shore, the subways at Queensboro Plaza, the #7 meeting the LIRR in Woodside, and how the subway and train affected LIC's development.
  • Meet outside the NY Transit Museum Gallery in Grand Central. Sponsored by the NY Transit Museum.
  • Daylight Factory Buildings in Long Island City
  • March 25, 2006, 1-3:30 p.m., $12/member or $15, 212-935-3960
  • Daylight factory buildings were a type of factory archiecture, innovated at the start of the 20th century, coinciding with Long Island City's mass industrialization. Now that the area is moving toward residential focus, many of these buildings are finding new roles.
  • Meet at SE corner 21 St/44 Dr, LIC, (Exit Manhattan end of platform of E train, 23/Ely) Sponsored by the Municipal Art Society.
  • Crossing Newtown Creek: Contrasting Greenpoint and LIC
  • March 26, 2006, 1-3 p.m., 718-788-8500 Fees $11, $9/members, $8/seniors/students
  • Newtown Creek, the border of Queens and Brooklyn, is still feeling the effects of unregulated industry from over a hundred years ago. Explore the waterway from Greenpoint and cross the Pulaski Bridge to Long Island City. Tour includes the rapidly changing Queens West.
  • Meet outside Greenpoint Ave subway station (G train). Sponsored by the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment.
