Astorian Weekend Edition - January 27
By Meg of Joey in Astoria

Friday January 27, 2006
Out of work early this Friday? Catch a free screening of Kundun at the Museum of the Moving Image, starting at 5 p.m.

Then migrate to Ruthless Scrabble! It's the ultimate Scrabble tournament, hosted by Waltz-Astoria (2314 Ditmars Blvd). Sign up online for your chance to claim the victory and the fame (and a prize)! Play starts at 8 p.m.

Finish the evening at Doyle's Corner (42nd St and Broadway) to catch The Getaway Drive, the band that won the John Lennon Song Writing Contest last year and won the battle of the bands for New York. The show starts at 10:30 p.m., and the free admission is perfect.

Saturday afternoon, writers get out of your apartments and get feedback at the Women's Studio Center (21-25 44 Ave), where the monthly forum workshop is all about critiquing one another's work. Starting at 3 p.m., bring one piece of writing (short) to share with peers.

If writing's not your bag (and/or you're not of the female persuasion), check out PS 1's (22-25 Jackson Ave) Black & Blue, a multimedia lecture on painters Steven Parrino and Yves Klein (2 p.m., free with museum admission).

Sunday afternoon, relax at Freeze Peach Cafe (22-00 29th St). From 4 to 8 p.m., the lovely Ariana will be serving up great coffee, tea, and snacks, and donating the proceeds to a worthy cause.
