Masso - New Restaurant in Long Island City, Queens

Friday January 20, 2006
Masso opened up last night on Vernon Boulevard in the Hunters Point neighborhood of Long Island City. Masso is an Italian restaurant and lounge, opened by Francine DiTomaso of Luca Lounge in the Village. She's not just an LIC restaurateur, but a neighborhood resident.

I haven't eaten at Masso yet, but Francine tells me the menu is similar to Luca with lots of salads, lasanga, and bruschetta with a few new French-inspired dishes. She's adding a hanger steak, mussels with fries, and lamb chops served over greens.

And though she's come from Manhattan, she didn't bring the city prices with her to Masso. Entrees are about $12-$15 each. Plus there are a few family-style platters that are a bargain.

Sounds like a nice addition to the changing Vernon Boulevard strip. If you've made it to Masso, please let us know via comments or email.

  • Masso Restaurant and Lounge
  • Masso, 47-25 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City, at 47th Rd, 718-482-8151
  • Subway: E, V to 23 St-Ely Ave; 7 to Vernon Blvd
  • Open for dinner from 4 p.m. to midnight, and on Saturday and Sunday for brunch from 10:30 a.m., closed on Mondays

We’ve been to Masso over the weekend. The food is great and the atmosphere is even better. We sat around the fireplace and ordered a bottle of wine and some pizzas. This place is highly recommended.

I LOVE Masso!!! We got an assortment relatively low brow types of food (i.e. pizza, chicken parmasean, etc) for around $10-12 each, but the quality of even these basic dishes was among the best I’ve had in years. Bravo Masso!

We also love this place! We’ve been three or four times since we moved to LIC a few months ago. Dinner and Brunch are delicious and don’t break the bank. The staff are also very friendly and professional.

I went there for brunch this past Saturday and it was terrible. There was loud, AWFUL music playing and when I asked if it could be turned down, the server said that she could just a bit because of the boss (who seemingly wasn’t there). She didn’t turn it down anyways. When the food came, it was clearly very uninspired and tasteless. The “salad” was just a bit if lettuce with some nice browned edges and the toast looked like it was wonderbread – literally. Don’t waste your time or money on this bad-vibe place. Lounge 47 across the street or Tournesol down the road are far better.

I recently had a party at Masso. The food was very good, the wines were exceptional and the service was excellent not to mention the great atmosphere. As far as price goes they can’t be beat.
We will be back again.

Great atmosphere, bad food. I’ve eaten there three times and been unimpressed with my meal every time. Last week, my boyfriend’s steak came out and was ice cold… literally. He sent it back and THE SAME STEAK came out except it’d gone from medium-rare to well done. They just threw it back on the grill! Who does that? Wish I could recommend it, but I can’t.

It was a charming place, and I agree that the food was horrible. From appetizer to entree the food was overly salty. They used tons of seasalt. It was one of the worst meals I’ve ever had. Save your money and time!

I’m a guy who just moved into the neighborhood. My friends and I frequent Masso at least once a week and have a bettter time each time. They also carry a nice selection of reds and whites by the glass. I’ve never been disappointed…You won’t be either.

I needed a central point to meet friends for a Saturday night dinner. Another friend suggested Masso in LIC.
Bottom line…. Food, service, prices & Atmosphere was GREAT!, especially for a place outside of New York. My friends & I will be going back.

With so much going on in LIC right now you would think everyone would try to step up their game. Not so here. This is one of the pitiful underachieving establshments that tend to cause critics and diners alike to rate Queens bars and restaurants on a “Queens-curve”. As in, it’s a good place to eat…y’know…for Queens.” Even with so-called curve there is very little to recommend other than the lovely glass of Rose I ordered. Unimaginative dishes, undercooked calamari, overcooked steak, watery soup, poor presentation and indifferent almost robotic service. As for atmosphere…well, I didn’t see any.

Terrible- the service was awful, we sat and waited for our food to come out for two hours- We had to ASK for bread to hold us over while we waited. The food came out and it was not good- chewy (in a bad way) french toast, charred and dried out shrimp, and dried out bacon. How do you mess up BACON?

(19) Danielle says:

I couldn’t disagree more with those of you who disagreed with Masso, I think it is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! The food is beyond compare in the the area, especially the Chicken Parm which I highly recommend, and the prices can’t be beat for LIC. The staff is very friendly, all fitting in with the theme and the drinks are great.

Over the summer, it is a great place to eat outside with some cold drinks in the sun with a lovely view of Manhattan. The owners are sometimes present, in one occasion I had a chance to speak with the Lady-owner who is an absolute doll!

If there is a place to eat in LIC with friends, family, or just for a drink, Masso is the place!!
