Today's NY Times profiles Bukharian cuisine and restaurants. The Bukharian are Jews from Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries. About 120,000 have left Central Asia in recent years, with many settling in Forest Hills and Rego Park (and Kew Gardens and Briarwood).

The NY Times refers to the neighborhood nickname as Regostan Park to reflect the Bukharian influx, but I've never heard that one. I have heard and enjoyed the sword-skewered kebabs and garlicky and parsley-topped fries of Rego Parkistan.

Restaurants profiled include the small but mighty Salut and others on 108th Street in Rego Park/Forets Hills:

  • The Silk Road Leads to Queens (NY Times)
  • Cheburechnaya, 92-09 63rd Dr, Rego Park, 718-897-9080
  • Restaurant Salute, 63-42 108th St, Rego Park, 718-275-6860
  • Shalom 64-47 108th St, Rego Park, 718-275-2220
  • Tandoori Bukharian Bakery 99-04 63rd Rd, Rego Park, 718-897-1071
  • Bahar (Afghan restaurant), 82-19 Queens Blvd, Elmhurst, 718-426-5822

Ungrateful staff did not greet my husband and I nor, come over to us when they saw us standing at the door waiting to be seated.

No, dear – that’s simply the definition of “Jewish service.” Have a sense of humor, and don’t look so hard for prejudice.

It is not a simply “Jewish service”, don’t generalize, guys. It is a more complicated “Bukharian Jewish service”. Big difference!
