January Art Openings in Astoria and LIC

Thursday January 5, 2006
O'Keeffe Art-O-Mat is a fairly new art gallery/art store on Vernon Boulevard in Hunters Point. They said they might be open for just the holidays, but they must have done well because here they are with a new show of Tony Vaccaro photographs.

Vaccaro, a longtime Hunters Point resident, was a pioneering photojournalist at Life and other magazines in the 1950s, whose photos have been exhibited at the Met and museums around the world. His photos at Art-O-Mat are of Georgia O'Keeffe working in her New Mexico studio in 1960. Most will be on display for the first time.

  • O'Keeffe Illuminated: Photographs by Tony Vaccaro
  • January 26, 2006 – March 5, 2006, Fridays 11 - 7, Saturdays 10 - 8, and Sundays 11 - 5 or by appointment. Opening: January 26 at 6 p.m.
  • Art-O-Mat, 46-46 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City, at 47th Rd
Buzzer Thirty presents recent works by Olja Stipanovic, a Long Island City-based artist. Looks like her art is all about skin. Her photos on Buzzer Thirty's site are painful. (Also check 30's online gallery.)
  • Recent Works, Olja Stipanovic
