I was considering taking a water taxi over to 34th from LIC, but I have just given up on getting paid today. Instead, I am getting my bike in case the strike continues, then I will bike over the bridge tomorrow…

Michael,
That’s a tough one. Your best bet is a taxi. By law a taxi has to drive you where you want to go, but the driver may pressure you, saying he can’t leave Manhattan. That’s not true.

The city buses and Triboro to LGA aren’t running, but there are private shuttles.

lole,

Brooklyn to Long Island City you can do via LIRR. Take the LIRR from Brooklyn to Jamaica. Transfer to Long Island City line. Caution — trains to Long Island City run during the day — and not on weekends. You might have to wait an hour in Jamaica for a connection.

Good luck.

You’re best bet is to get a cab or hitch a ride from Greenpoint.

Nancy,

If you can grab a taxi or dollar van going that way, take it.

Otherwise take the LIRR — this is going to take you hours. Go by LIRR from Brooklyn Flatbush Ave to Jamaica. Transfer to a local going toward Manhattan — and get off the train in Forest Hills. Ask before you leave Jamaica because not all trains stop at Forest Hills. Then walk north across Queens Blvd from the train station (toward shops). Cross Queens Bvd and you’ll find 108th St. Then look for a dollar van going up 108th St. Or take a very long walk to Corona.

How do you get from Sunnyside to Crown Heights and back?

December 21, 2005 at 2:54 pm
(10) John Roleke says:

Jessica,
Walk to the LIRR in Woodside — Roosevelt and 61st St. Take the LIRR to Jamaica. Transfer to a Brooklyn-bound LIRR and get off at Nostrand Ave. That puts you at Nostrand and Atlantic Ave, right on Crown Heights border.

(11) Christine says:

I have to get to Lower Manhattan from Astoria. Any suggestions? And what/where are dollar vans?

December 21, 2005 at 5:01 pm
(12) queens says:

Christine,

The dollar vans are common in eastern and central Queens. They are owned by private companies, and with the strike are running along major bus routes. However, I don’t think there are many running in Astoria.

If you can walk across the Triborough Bridge, then at 96th St you can find a car pool or taxi to ride in downtown.

Also in Long Island City, car pools formed outside the #7 subway stop at the Hunters Point Avenue and 21st Street (rush hour morning).

Another option is the Water taxi from Hunters Point. It stops at 34th St and at Wall St.
