Where's Andy's Mojo? Andy Roddick Loses in First Round of the US Open

At the US Open in Flushing Meadows, the big big story of the day is Andy Roddick losing in the first round in straight sets to Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. Unseeded Muller took the all three sets in tie-breakers, serving more aces than Roddick in this huge US Open upset.

Roddick, ranked fourth in the Open, is the face of American men's tennis, and the center of an American Express ad campaign called "Where's Andy Mojo?" In the ads Roddick can't play up to speed because his mojo is off partying. Who knew it would come true? It's a birthday nightmare for Roddick, who turned 23 today, August 30.

Muller in post-game commentary said, "I came out here to have a good time, and I enjoyed every minute of it." Tomorrow Muller plays doubles with Robby Ginepri, whom he will face in the second round of the singles competition. (See NY Times coverage of Roddick's defeat.)
