US Open Tennis 2005 - Top-Seeded Players

Monday August 29, 2005
The US Open starts today, August 29, and the top-seeded tennis players this year are Roger Federer of Switzerland and Maria Sharapova of Russia. Federer is the reigning US Open and Wimbledon champion, and Sharapova, the 2004 Wimbeldon winner, gained the number one in ranking in women's tennis just last week.

In Men's competition, Rafael Nadal of Spain follows Federer in the second seed. Number three is Lleyton Hewitt of Australia (2001 US Open champion), followed by US's fierce-serving Andy Roddick (#4 and the 2003 US Open champion), and at #5 Marat Safin of Russia (the reigning Australian Open champion).

In Women's, Sharapova is followed by second-seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States, (the 1998 US Open champion), Amelie Mauresmo (#3) of France, Kim Clijsters (#4) of Belgium, and defending US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia (#5).

Other top-contending American players are Serena Williams (#8), reigning Wimbeldon champion Venus Willams (#10), and Andre Agassi (#7). At last year's Open, Tim Henman (UK, #12) put on an impressive performance, and I'm hoping he plays well again this year. See all seeds from USOpen.org.

The About Guide to Tennis has great game profiles for the major female tennis and male tennis stars, including Roger Federer, Lindsay Davenport, Andy Roddick, and Maria Sharapova. Also see the US Open Trivia Game.
