Jets Back to Queens?

Tuesday August 16, 2005
Could it come true? Could the Jets actually return to Queens, New York? The newspapers reported at the end of last week that the New York Jets have agreed to meet with Borough President Helen Marshall and to consider a new home in Queens.

Wouldn't that be great? Three reasons Queens is the best place for a new Jets stadium: The Jets started in Queens (1964, at Shea Stadium) and the fan base is still centered in Queens and Long Island; it's the New York Jets and will never be the New Jersey Jets; and sharing a stadium with the Giants is like living in a two-family house -- it's fine, but no one wants to live in one forever.

The funniest bit from my angle are the folks who pooh-pooh Queens as a sporting destination. I'm sure they're the same folks who love the US Open, but have no idea that the Open, one of the most popular annual sporting events, is in the heart of Queens hearts -- Flushing Meadows–Corona Park. It's the same park where the Mets play in Shea Stadium and will play in their future stadium. It's the same park where some of the best amateur soccer in NYC is played, and where dragon boats raced last weekend. Newsday gets it right, hoping Queens hits the trifecta of the Jets, Mets, and Open.
