Shaolin Monks at Dragon Boat Festival This Weekend

Wednesday August 10, 2005
Just a reminder that this weekend is the Dragon Boat Races and Festival in Flushing Meadows. The races are held on Meadow Lake, which has earned recent notoriety as the home of the invasive snakehead fish, so don't fall in the water.

There's live entertainment on Saturday and Sunday. Top pick has to be a kung fu martial arts demonstration by Shaolin monks. Yes, Shaolin monks. Since they're featured in so many Hong Kong kung fu movies, I honestly never knew if they really existed. They'll be in Flushing Meadows Park this Saturday and Sunday, performing at 1 p.m.

The other events not to be missed (well, besdies the racing) is the dumpling eating contest. It's scheduled for Sunday.
