Himalayan Yak Restaurant in Jackson Heights

Thursday July 14, 2005
The other week I spotted the Himalayan Yak Restaurant (72-20 Roosevelt Ave, Jackson Heights) on a walk down Roosevelt, but didn't have time to visit this new Tibetan and Nepali spot. Luckily, a couple food bloggers -- The Taste Land and A Year in Food -- saw the same sign, went on in, and later both wrote up their great experiences. As interesting as the restaurant sounds is reading two writers digest the same meal:

In the hurry to catch the train, I had only a few minutes to ‘research’ what else ( other than the known & rather preditable Indian food places) Jackson Heights has to offer…and this was one site that Google led me to. The 2 reviews though from 2005 both were largely positive and that gave me the courage to try this place out today.

My previous singular experience with Nepali food was stellar - and that was in Madison, WI an year ago. So that memmory + the 2 positive reviews gave me the confidence to take my wife and her best friend to Himalyan Yak. And we made a rather hasty exit after 30 minutes with a bad taste in the mouth ( which unfortunately still stays), a mostly unfilled stomach and spoilt mood for the outing with a unanimous ‘Yak ? or Yucks ?’

Now here is the disclaimer - our taste buds are still mostly Indian…the acquired tastes vary for each of us - all having spent different years outside India. Before I get more time to put the story of this misadventure in more details, here is how I would sum it up for intermediate closure - ‘It sucks’ - and I can say that with reasonable certainity for an Indian subcontinent taste palet of moderate tolerance and acceptance of non Indian tastes !

I am a regular customer at himalayan yak restaurant, ever since the first day I had my first bite there of Nepali cuisine. I think by far, its the best nepali tibetan food i have eaten. I love south eastern cuisine, and i have to say that this is one of my favorite restaurants. I always eat my favorite which is ALoo dum, momo delicious, and nepali daal bhaat. Everything there tastes good I am sure, but these are my personal favorites. Well i feel sorry for the upset indian above but I think he just was having a bad day and blamed it on the food. Yak restaurant deserves a thumbs up all the way. To those who wanna try the food at this place, i highly recommend itt! And having been to Nepal and tasted the food there first hand, I would say that the food at this place definitely is excellent. Everyone should try this wonderful place!!

i went to himalayan yak restaurant the other day with a few friends to eat some delicious nepali and tibetan food. Wow to my surprise they have renovated the entire restaurant and made it soo beautiful inside. its 2 floors now and the interior design is very authentic nepali ambiance i must say. I enjoyed the food and the venue and so did all my friends. I highly recommend this place to people who are familiar with the food because its excellent and those who love trying new cuisine.=)

Congratulations Himalyan Yak restaurant and wish you all the best. It is nice to see more and more Nepali restaurants are spreading all over the world. It helps to promote Nepali culture and produces some Nepali business people. There are quite a few Nepali restaurants in australia as well.
