LongIsCity Opening Weekend - A Weekend of Art in Long Island City

Wednesday May 4, 2005
LongIsCity is the banner under which the Long Island City Cultural Alliance (Long Island City museums) plus galleries and artists team up a couple times a year to draw in visitors. This May 14 and 15 it's on again with a few art openings and a couple new twists.

There are openings at the SculptureCenter and Socrates Sculpture Park, a concert at Noguchi (and Socrates), artist-led tours of P.S. 1, and open studios throughout the area (schedule in PDF). Sounds like a fine day of art exploring. The only thing that gets me is the name - LongIsCity?

Here are a few tips to make the most of your LongIsCity day.

More events are scheduled for Sunday than Saturday. Socrates' opening reception and concert that Sunday afternoon sound ideal if the sun is out. If the weather's awful, watch Porgy and Bess at the Museum of the Moving Image. Whatever you do, check out the exterior of 5 Pointz and then venture inside for the open studios at Crane St. Studios.

  • LongIsCity Information Center at Court Square on Jackson Avenue - Rent bikes, get maps and directions, learn about events
  • Subways: 7 to Courthouse Sq/45 Rd, E and V to Ely Ave.
  • Free shuttle - between the Asia Society in Manhattan (725 Park Ave at 70th St) and the Noguchi Museum (which is a long walk north of P.S. 1)
  • New Twists - Bicycles and Cocktails
    • Two-for-one margaritas at Lounge 47 (47-10 Vernon Blvd)
    • Two-for-one drinks at Jackson Avenue Steakhouse (12-23 Jackson Ave)
    • Rent bicycles at the LongIsCity Information Center. It's a great way to get from PS 1 in Hunters Point up north to Noguchi and Socrates in Ravenswood.
