Flight 587 - Rockaways Crash- Investigation to Reopen?
The initial investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board determined that the co-pilot's "unnecessary and aggressive" maneuvering caused the plane's tail to snap off. Though manufacturer Airbus was faulted for the design, the primary cause was the co-pilot's mishandling.
Contrary to common belief at the time of the crash, no evidence of terrorism was ever found in the Rockaways tragedy.
Last month a similar Airbus made an emergency landing in Cuba after its rudder broke off, which has prompted Senator Charles Schumer to call for a new investigation of Flight 587 and the Airbus A310.
