Niederstein's Closing
Monday February 7, 2005
The oldest restaurant in Queens shut its doors last weekend after a 150-year run. Niederstein's in Middle Village was a German restaurant that dated back to when the neighborhood was German and back to when the neighborhood wasn't even a neighborhood. See the NYTimes for the farewell.
Still craving roast pork and potato pancakes? For German food in Queens try:
- Zum Stammtisch serves meat topped with meat and glorious drafts (Zum Stammtisch, 69-46 Myrtle Avenue, Glendale, NY 11385)
- Chalet Alpina is just as good and closer to the subway (Chalet Alpina, 98-35 Metropolitan Avenue, Forest Hills, NY)
- Bona is a Polish restaurant, but they do serve some fine kraut (Bona, 1-24 Fresh Pond Road, Ridgewood, NY 11385)
