Hell Gate Bridge Oil Spill

Friday January 7, 2005
Overnight a tugboat ran aground under Hell Gate Bridge, releasing oil into the East River. The extent of damage and pollution is not yet clear. See the NY Post coverage.

UPDATE: Not a drop spilled, according to ABC News coverage.

Hell Gate Bridge is one of the most beautiful bridges in NYC. A steel arch bridge, it connects Ward's Island to Queens, with its mooring right in Astoria Park, just north of the Queensboro Bridge. It carries trains across the East River to the Sunnyside Rail Yards, and is named for the treacherous waters where the East River and Harlem River meet.
