Museum for African Art in Long Island City

Monday December 13, 2004
The only museum dedicated to African art in New York City, the Museum for African Art is wonderful for its exhibits of contemporary African art and performances. In other words, it's alive and features much more than classic African wooden sculpture. (Unfortunately, the museum plans to move to Manhattan in a couple years.)

The current exhibit, "Personal Affects," showcases contemporary South African art, and is co-hosted by the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The work of 17 artists, all new pieces commissioned for the show, are strong and varied in media. A highlight is the animal-human hybrids by artist Jane Alexander.
