Queens Is Back in Business
Friday August 15, 2003
The power came back up in my neighborhood not ten minutes ago. All I can say is hurrah, hurrah to its return, and hurrah to NYC for weathering the crisis in style. I've never seen more polite driving in Queens than I did today. Traffic has been lighter and easier than it is normally on a summer Friday.
Here are a few articles on the blackout. First, the NY Times has the roundup and a comparison with past blackouts.
The only people who had real trouble were those trapped in the subways. Still people rallied. This Newsday article quotes a Ridgewood resident, who was trapped in the subway, saying, "It was pretty cool. People were cracking jokes. It was hot but nobody really got serious."
Another Newsday article describes the scene on Queens Boulevard yesterday.
And the best thing about last night: we saw the night sky stars.
